Dream Job, Global Stage: Kath Carlin on Traveling the World as a Makeup Artist

Kath Carlin

How does a teenage dream turn into a decades-long career in the competitive world of makeup artistry? Kath Carlin, a Melbourne-based hair and makeup artist, joins The Makeup Insider to share her inspiring journey from a determined 16-year-old to a seasoned industry professional working across television, commercials, and red carpet events.

A Teenage Dream Backed by Family Support

Kath’s story begins with a clear vision—at just 16, she knew she wanted to become a makeup artist. Despite limited resources and some skepticism from school, she never wavered. A pivotal figure in her journey was her father, a film and television director, who believed in her dream and used his connections to help her get her foot in the door. Thanks to his support, Kath enrolled in a one-year full-time course at Victoria University, covering everything from fashion and prosthetics to hairstyling.

Learning the Business of Beauty

One of the standout elements of Kath’s education was the emphasis on business skills. She learned how to set up a freelance business, obtain an ABN, and manage her finances—skills many artists overlook but are vital for a long-term career. Kath credits this knowledge as foundational to her success in the freelance world.

Building Versatility: From Lotto Presenters to the Tennis Grand Slams

Early in her career, Kath found herself at Channel 7, doing makeup for the nightly lotto presenter. It was her first taste of the fast-paced television industry and a lesson in being versatile. Wanting to offer more, she later completed a full-time hairdressing course, a move that made her even more valuable in the world of TV and commercial shoots.

Her diverse skill set paid off. Kath eventually secured work at Blush Photography, where she honed her ability to adapt to a wide range of clients and faces. This experience sharpened her eye and refined her speed—both essential in high-pressure environments.

A Decade of Grand Slam Glam

For over ten years, Kath worked on one of the most exclusive and fast-paced circuits in the world—makeup for the tennis Grand Slams. From the French Open and Wimbledon to the US Open and Australian Open, she’s been behind the scenes ensuring TV presenters, talent, and high-profile guests look flawless under the global spotlight.

How did she land this gig? It all began with a friendship. Fellow artist Sarah Klein introduced her to the opportunity, and Kath proved herself with professionalism, speed, and an eye for camera-ready looks. Working in these high-pressure environments requires far more than technical skill—it demands adaptability, quick thinking, and the ability to glam someone up in a matter of minutes while navigating broadcast timelines and international travel.

“I’ve done touch-ups courtside, in back rooms, and even while someone’s on the phone to their producer,” she laughs. “It’s chaos, but I love it.”

The Reality of Freelance Life

Kath is refreshingly honest about the freelance grind. From slow months to schedule chaos, she’s experienced it all. But through it, she’s stayed grounded and passionate. Her advice? Stay adaptable, keep learning, and build genuine relationships. Her career is a testament to the value of positivity and resilience.

Social Media With a Smile

On social media, Kath strikes a unique balance between professional artistry and light-hearted content. She’s not afraid to share the real behind-the-scenes moments, adding a personal touch that resonates with followers and reflects her approachable, fun-loving nature.

Debunking the Glamour Myth

Kath is quick to challenge the misconception that makeup artistry is all glamour. The reality? Long hours, constant adaptation, and serious skill. Her journey is a reminder that success in this industry demands more than just talent—it requires grit, heart, and a whole lot of hustle.

Kath’s Advice for Aspiring Artists

For those dreaming of a career that spans continents and red carpets, Kath’s advice is clear: be open to everything. Whether it's TV, weddings, fashion, or live events, the more versatile you are, the more doors open.

“Also,” she adds, “be reliable. It sounds basic, but being someone who turns up, delivers, and gets along with the team? That gets you hired again and again.”
